A Chapter of the International Cake Explorations Societe
Frequently Asked Questions about GA ICES
Q: How do I join GA ICES?
A:In order to be a member of GA ICES, you must first join ICES. By joining ICES, you automatically become a member of the state chapter. You can join with cash, check or credit card at your local Day of Sharing, or join on-line at the ICES web site with a credit card. You may also download a membership application and send by regular mail if you do not want to use a credit card on line. Q:What is "DOS?" A:"DOS" stands for Day of Sharing. The GA Chapter of ICES meets once per quarter/four times per year for a day of demonstrations, sharing ideas, and a membership meeting. Some DOS' are potluck and some are catered. See the Events tab for upcoming DOS dates. Q: Do I have to be an ICES member to attend the DOS?
A:No, you do not have to be a member to attend a DOS; however, our policy is typically "first time a visitor, second time a member." We invite you to come to a meeting and check us out--see if you want to be a part of ICES and GA ICES. Q: Can I be a member of another state's ICES group? A:No, your ICES membership is based on the state in which you reside. While you are certainly welcome and encouraged to attend other states' Days of Sharing, your membership will be based on the state where you live. Q: Can I bring a guest/non-member with me to a Day of Sharing?
A:Absolutely. Anyone is welcome at our sharing days. We charge a door fee on those days to members and guests alike. Q: How often does the GA Chapter meet and where do you meet? A:GA ICES meets four times per year--once per quarter. Since we are a statewide organization, meetings move around the state so that all members share the driving. Q: Do I have to pre-register? A:You need to pre-register for Days of Sharing at which the lunch will be catered. For meetings where we are having a covered dish lunch, no pre-registration is required. Just bring a dish, the recipe, and a friend or two. If you have any questions, contact the State Representative. Q: How much is the door fee at the Days of Sharing? A:The door fee is a minimum of $10 and can be more depending on whether we have guest demonstrators, a catered meal, and/or the cost of meeting space.
Q: Do you have an age limit for DOS attendees?
A:We do not have an age limit; however, attendance of young children (infants, toddlers) at the DOS/meetings is not encouraged as attendees must be comfortable with quietly sitting still while demonstrations and the meeting are in progress for several hours. While there are periodic short breaks, one can expect to sit sometimes for 30 minutes to an hour for longer demonstrations.Courtesy and respect for fellow attendees should be considered. Please be aware that full door fees must be charged for children in attendance especially when meeting at hotels or facilities where we will have catered food as these facilities do not give a price differentiation for children vs. adults; the chapter is charged the same amount for each person no matter how small. This mirrors ICES policy that everyone who enters an ICES demonstration must be registered and will pay the published registration fee.
Q: What is Silent Auction? A:Silent auction is a way for GA ICES to raise money for the club. You bring items from home (they do not have to be cake decorating related), and if the item is sold, you can split the proceeds from the sale 50/50 with the club, or you can donate all of the proceeds to the club. This helps the club and you get rid of those new or gently used items while making a little money too. Q: What if I have a lot of stuff I want to sell? A:At most meetings, enough space is available to offer tables for individuals to rent to sell their items and keep all of the money from their sales. Tables are $25 for usually a 6' x 6' table. This is a great idea if you have quite a few items to sell, plus the money's all yours. Contact the GA ICES Treasurer for information regarding reserving a table at meetings. Sometimes space may be limited and we may not be able to accommodate requests for sales tables.
